WHAT SIZE SKI SHOULD I USE?

MMST Ski Length Guidelines

Here are some quick suggestions on ski length to help guide you to the appropriate ski. If you are unsure about lengths or types (event specific or Jr vs. adult), you should contact your coach, as you may get conflicting views from other sources.

At a younger age- MM through J4 ski lengths will vary depending on a few different variables: Athlete’s ability and intensity, Age, Weight, and Height.

• A general rule of thumb is that J5’s and younger will need only one pair of skis, these should have a slalom type sidecut. Skis should be no taller than the athletes forehead.

• J4’s (depending on commitment level) will generally look at event specific skis i.e. 1 pair for Slalom and 1 pair of Giant Slalom. SL skis should reach to nose level, GS skis to forehead.

J3’s- Need to have Event Specific equipment

• SLALOM SKIS; no shorter than 150cm.

Regardless of your athletes height, slalom courses at the J3 level range from anywhere between 10m to 13m. If you are on anything shorter than 150cm the arc will be too small.

• GIANT SLALOM SKIS; no shorter than 170cm.

Again regardless of your athletes height, GS courses open up at the J3 level. You need this length of ski to have a big enough arc to carve the turn. Also the longer ski will run faster.

• SG SKIS; 15 to 20cm longer than your GS skis.

You do not necessarily need SG skis as a first year J3. And if you do decide you want to have these skis you can wait until February to buy them

J1-2 Athletes need to follow specific guidelines set down by FIS and are as follows:

• SL- W- Min. Length 155cm
M- Min. Length 165 cm (J2 M 155)

• GS- W- Min. Length 175 cm Radius 23m
M- Min. Length 180 cm Radius 27m

• SG- W- Min. Length 195 cm Radius 33m
M-Min Length 200 cm Radius 33m

• DH W- Min Length 205 cm Radius 45m
M- Min Length 210 cm Radius 45m
